Exhibitions / MOSTYN | Jane Joseph: ETCHINGS FOR PRIMO LEVI [institutional leadership]

19.01.2012 to 11.03.2012

This exhibition presents two unique sets of etchings inspired by the life and work of Primo Levi. If This is a Man, Levi’s autobiographical account of the year he spent imprisoned at Auschwitz is now considered to be equally important as a record of the Holocaust and as a masterpiece of European literature of the 20th century. Inspired by both the over-riding spirit of hopefulness in Levi’s writing and the clarity of his testament, these works align a closely fought struggle for a viable image with perhaps the hardest of subject matter. Holocaust Memorial Day 2012 is on the 27th of January. - - - - - Small in scale, the images are as diverse in ideas as they are in the use of the etching medium; many have been drawn directly from observation onto the plate. - - - - Examples of Jane Joseph’s work are held in many public collections including the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; British Museum; Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge; Imperial College, London; Lindley Library (RHS), London; Yale Center for British Art, USA and the Herbarium Library of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, London.
