Alfredo Cramerotti: The Hyperimage

Perhaps controversially, it is possible to speak of a new kind of photography. A photography that is an agent of “translation” rather than representation. Translation between different contexts, realms, vocabularies, languages, attitudes, identities. A photography that has outgrown itself, that has exceeded its original function and that now is pretty much unmoored from any discipline it was previously attached to. Effectively, a photography that is the forbearer of a system-oriented culture, the “information age" in which we are immersed today.

Riga Photography Biennial 2016
Symposium: Image and Photography in the Post-Digital Era
April 22 and 23, 2016

The Mill (Brīvības Street 33), Riga

Curated by Maija Rudovska

What is the role of image in the endless stream of information? What is its power? How has transformation, dissemination, acceleration and manipulation of image impacted the medium of photography? How to ensure the survival of digital data, the preservation of information for the next generations? How accessible the technologies of digital image production and sharing have become? Is selfie a byproduct of this? What can an image reveal and hide? Are we living in image apocalypse? Is it possible to talk about a new kind of thought, perception, production and consumption because of the growing influence of the internet and digital technologies?

These and other questions regarding image and photography in the post-digital era are discussed in the Riga Photography Biennial 2016 Symposium, taking place in co-working space The Mill (Brīvības iela 33) in Riga (LV), April 22 and 23, 2016
